# [Global Field] - About Global Field

This page explains what a Global field is in Contentstack, why you would use it, and how Nested Global fields help structure reusable field groups. It is intended for developers and content modelers designing content types within a stack, especially when aiming for consistent, reusable field definitions.

## About Global Field

A **Global** **field** is a reusable set of fields that you define once and utilize across multiple [content types](/docs/developers/create-content-types/about-content-types/) within your [stack](/docs/developers/set-up-stack/about-stack/). This approach streamlines [content modeling](/docs/developers/content-modeling/about-content-modeling/) and ensures consistency, eliminating the need to manually recreate common fields for different content types.

## Key Features and Benefits
- **Centralized Management:** Update a Global field in one place, and the changes reflect across all content types where it's used.
- **Consistency:** Maintain uniformity in fields across various content types, reducing redundancy.
- **Efficiency:** Save time by reusing predefined sets of fields instead of configuring them from scratch for each content type.

**Note:**
- Global fields are specific to a stack and cannot be shared across multiple stacks.
- When working with specific branches, any Global fields you create or update will be unique to that [branch](/docs/developers/branches/about-branches/). Refer to the [Branch-specific Modules](/docs/developers/branches/branch-specific-modules) documentation for more details.

Suppose you create a Global field named **"SEO"** containing fields like **"Meta Title"** and **"Meta Description"**. By adding this Global field to any content type, these subfields automatically appear within that content type, ensuring uniformity.

## Nested Global Fields
Contentstack supports **Nested Global** fields, allowing you to include a Global field within another Global field. This feature enables deeper content structuring and modular reuse of field groups.

### Benefits of Nested Global Fields
- **Hierarchical Structuring:** Organize content fields in a nested manner, reflecting complex data relationships.
- **Modularity:** Reuse nested sets of fields across different content types, enhancing scalability.
- **Simplified Management:** Changes made to a nested Global field automatically propagate to the parent Global field, ensuring consistency.

Consider a **"Product Details"** Global field containing subfields like **"Specifications"** and **"Pricing"**. You can nest this within another Global field, such as **"Product Information"**, to maintain a hierarchical content structure.

**Tip:** When using Nested Global fields, ensure that field configurations align with your content structure. Proper planning helps maintain clarity and efficiency in managing complex content models.

By adopting Global fields and Nested Global fields, you can create a flexible, consistent, and efficient content architecture within Contentstack.

## Common questions

### Can Global fields be shared across multiple stacks?
No. Global fields are specific to a stack and cannot be shared across multiple stacks.

### If I update a Global field, do I need to update each content type that uses it?
No. Update a Global field in one place, and the changes reflect across all content types where it's used.

### Are Global fields branch-specific?
Yes. When working with specific branches, any Global fields you create or update will be unique to that branch.

### What happens when I nest a Global field inside another Global field?
Changes made to a nested Global field automatically propagate to the parent Global field, ensuring consistency.
